In 1973 the Scottish Tar Distillers factory at Camelon was destroyed by fire.

These dramatic pictures from The Herald archives show the fire brigade bravely battling the blaze against a background of billowing black smoke.

The fire pretty much ended more than 100 years of chemical production on that site.

i was 10 yrs old we lived across the canal in fairly gardens ,i remember being at carmuirs school looking out the windows at the sky being full of thick black smoke. i remember the date well,we made up a song about it .{do you remember the 6th of november light up the skies with tarworks fireworks} ,,copying the tv advert of the day advertising standard fireworks..its funny how you cant remember yesterday but 40yrs ago no problem ha ha
